Aug 18, 2012 - Disease Report Supplement #22-b

There was a confirmed find of late blight in a potato field in the Carberry area in the R.M. of North Cypress yesterday (Aug 17). The affected parts of the field have been disked under and Curzate and a contact fungicide have been applied to the rest of the field and surrounding fields. A sample of the disease has been collected and will be sent for strain identification.

The late blight risk model has 7-day DSVs accumulation which puts the risk from medium to high at various sites; and now with the presence of inoculum in the area it is important to tighten the frequency of late blight fungicide applications. It may be prudent to use systemic (translaminar) fungicides along with contact fungicides in high risk areas. Fortunately, the weather forecast for the early part of next week is hot and dry which should limit disease progress and spread.

It is important to scout in wind-protected areas, like fields in valleys and close to tree-line, where the foliage tends to remain wet longer after rains, irrigation or overnight dew.
